Among the many, many rooms that needed an over haul, the dining room was definietly one. When we moved in it was a square empty room with water damage around the front window, toasted sand color walls, and unfinished wood floors. Take a look at the original state of the room here. It was important to me to complete the dining room. I didn’t want Ryan and I eating at a coffee table for the rest of our lives, so I jumped into the décor without having a plan, a vision…nothing. Big mistake.
By the end, the room never felt done. It was such a hodgepodge of furniture and ideas, that just when I thought the room was complete… it needed another serious overall.
The first thing we did was fix the water damaged trim around the window. You can see in the photo below, the trim still wasn’t fixed when we took the photos. When we tackled the trim we also painted the walls. We thought the dining room could have a brighter, more vibrate blue, so Ryan picked a somewhat saturated blue by Pittsburgh Paints in the color Chambray. Overall, the color was pretty, but had a little bit of a boy’s nursery vibe to it.
After we painted, the room had a brief stint as an office space, but that was quickly changed after I decided we needed a formal dining room. Once we removed the office furniture, the room sat empty and I was getting anxious to create a dining space.
Warning – more bad decoration desicions to follow.
I hastily purchased this table off of Craigslist, which was clearly a mistake. The mid-century modern silhouette was not something I usually gravitated towards. It didn’t match anything else in the house and was about 1.5ft too long for the room.
After I purchased the table, I found these blue floral chairs and decided they were perfect for the head of the table. They followed the blue and white color scheme that I love, so I jumped to buy them. I filled in the rest of the table with white solid chairs from IKEA. Again, I jumped to buy them to make the room complete, with no actual thought.
I added the white curtains, vintage mirror and drum shade as a last minute addition, because they were just sitting in what I like to call my archives in the basement. By the end it, the Joanna Gaines phenomenon was in full swing and I thought this was a happy medium between my style and her’s (SMH).
With all of those horrible decisions behind me, I found some new inspiration photos via Pinterest that is way more of the feel I truly enjoy. A bit cleaner, modern, and lots of shiny accident pieces.
After finding a few photos to base the new dining room off, I started my mood board. The focus? A large black table, gold accents, and chinoiserie inspired pieces throughout.
