What a mess of a backyard, right? This space needs more than just a little work. When we moved into the house five year ago, we immediately took steps to make it a more usable space:

  1. Ryan and my uncle built the fence around our entire backyard to corral the dogs
  2. We removed the railings that went around our entire deck. There was one little opening at the end of the garage (where those chairs are stacked up).
  3. To get the additional entertaining space we wanted, Ryan put in the paver patio directly behind the garage. However, there was a giant tree root right where the patio was going to be. So, I decided we could attach this weird bench to our deck for additional seating. In short, it works and I had Ryan make a spot for plants in the middle, so it is prettier during the right seasons.
  4. We purchased some furniture, so we could “use” the space, but it wasn’t pretty. An IKEA table, stackable Target chairs, and a sectional filled up the deck.

This spring, we are taking steps to make the backyard and deck functional and pretty.

So, what are we going to do?

  1. The large ash tree is getting cut down. This will immediately open up the deck to the backyard.
  2. Once the ash tree is gone, we are going to remove that makeshift bench we created to cover up that root. Ryan will then finish off the patio.
  3. One continual step that wraps around the entire deck.
  4. Perhaps refinishing the deck??
  5. New outdoor dining furniture and (of course) accessories
  6. Potted plants, potted plants and more potted plants
  7. Landscaping below the four windows that face the backyard
  8. Donate the swinging bench

To start the whole process, I created a vision board. Vision boards keep me on track. Otherwise, I end up at Home Goods, rethinking my whole color scheme and that never ends well. The below contains affiliated links.

Overall, I am thinking, blues (duh), equal amounts of greens, maybe some white fringe, white and terracotta pots. Stay tuned!!
