Home: Dining Room | The Reveal

This post is such a long time coming. In all honesty, we had the dining room 99% completed for the majority of the year. There were just a few items that needed to be completed. I outlined those items here.

Overall, I love how the room turned out. It is such a combination of new and old. The hutches are filled with my grandmother’s fine gold rimmed china, Neiman Marcus event serving dishes, and coffee mugs I purchased to be just like Victory Ford.

From the beginning, I knew I wanted the dining room to have a black table, a gold/bronze modern light fixture and neutral walls. The rest? I just figured out as I went.

PAINT – The goal all along was to do a grasscloth wallpaper, but since this isn’t our forever house, Ryan X’ed the wallpaper pretty fast. I still wanted to keep the walls a warm neutral color, so I went with Benjamin Moore paint in Revere Pewter. This color gave the room the warmth of natural grasscloth wallpaper, while still being a neutral palette that everything else just pops.

HUTCHES – From the day we moved in, I just felt like this12x12 square room needed something to make it feel like a dining room. Yes, I did put that little china hutch in the corner prior to this redo, but the room still felt like it was posing as a dining space.  After perusing on Pinterest, I knew white built-ins were the way to go. IKEA was going to be the cheapest option and since we don’t plan on this being out “forever” house, I was comfortable going the IKEA route. I’ll write up a DIY plan on a later post.
TABLE – After debating and debating on the style of table to get for the room, I decided on black with chunky statement legs. I didn’t want to spend an arm and a leg on a dining room table. They cost a fortune for something that is usually pressed wood. I hit up Craigslist last fall and found this beauty. Although it didn’t look like this when I picked it up, Ryan was able to rehab this with a lot of elbow grease and a lot black paint.  I’ll walk you through the DIY process later this week.

CHAIRS – Since I couldn’t justify the grasscloth wallpaper, I knew I wanted to still get texture back into the room and I thought the chairs were the place to do it. I found these slightly wingback chairs with a heavy textured ivory fabric that I think mocks grasscloth wonderfully.

ARTWORK – The artwork was something that just came together perfectly. I knew the art would be the first aspect of color the room was going to see color, so I wanted to make sure it would play well with the other accessories. Then, I found these bird prints on Etsy. I just knew they would be amazing in the space. I chose to go with the largest size of print to really make an impact on an otherwise blank wall.
