I knew we needed to add a statement piece in our living room. The walls were so blank, we had to bring some architecture into the room. I thought the easiest and most cost effective way was to add a large bookcase.
Now, how was I going to do this?
The image that started it all was one of Kate and Andy Spade’s New York City apartment. Their bookcase is incredibly grand and traditional in their eclectic apartment. I love the way it brought in some needed architecture into the room. I knew I needed to recreate this look for our living room.
I started the hunt in Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. I knew it was a possibility that I would need to find two separate pieces that could work together and that is exactly what happened. I first found the top half that would hold the books. Ryan picked it up from an elderly couple. The gentleman actual made it, which made it much more special.
The bottom part I didn’t find for a few more weeks. This was also picked up from a local neighborhood. The color matched the top half perfectly. Although, it was in a bit rougher shape than it originally looked in the photos online, I still loaded it up. After switching out the hardware, having Ryan make some easy moulding to cover where the top half met the bottom half, I attached some easy IKEA cabinet lighting and BOOM I have a pretty fantastic bookcase.
