Home | The Breezeway – Progress

I am so excited to give you an update on our breezeway. It definitely has come a long way from where we started. Take a look back at that here. We still have a ton to do and I probably will be tweaking some details a long the way. Let me walk you through what we have done.

The two biggest changes were the wall and the floor. I knew shiplap would be a quick, easy and very cost effective way to update the room. We first scrubbed those blonde wood planks to get the 60+ years of dirt and grim off of them. Super important since we ultimately used a latex base paint. Once all the walls were scrubbed and dried we used Sherwin Williams, Super White. It surprised us on how well it went down. We did about 2 coats and I am happy with the results. Some of the wood knots still show through the white paint, which I think gives the room a little boost in character.
The floor was another item on our had-to-do to-do list. Remember those disgusting grey carpet squares? They had to go! We decided on this luxury vinyl that matches the color of the original wood floors throughout the house. The vinyl is perfect for all of the dirt, rain, and snow we track through this room.

From the day we moved into the house (4 years ago), we knew we needed some kindof storage for all the shoes that would collect in the breezeway. Right way we purchased these two from IKEA. They were cheap and did the job. We added the beadboard and trim to each door along with the hardware. I do love how they fit space. They don’t over whelmed the area, yet fit a good amount of shoes. However, both Ryan and I are in agreement, that they are not here to stay. We both want a little more storage and something more pleasing to the eye.

In between the shoe storage, Ryan made this adorably simple bench. I painted the lower part with Benjamin Moore, Horizon and stained the top.  Right now, I think the bench still works out, but perhaps new bins on the shelf – some that are a bit more refined.

The room is still in need of art work and window treatments, but I am kindof at a loss. I think its going to be some sort of greenery or birds for artwork. Right now I have it narrowed down to two options John James Audubon. This artwork holds a special place in my heart, because my grandpa had a piece in his house for as long as I can remember. The colors of the bird would really brighten up the very white walls of the breezeway. Option 2  is the look of large white mats with botanical prints. Similar to these.

One of the last major things we need to complete in the breezeway is painting the door that leads into the house. We were able to prep the door and get it painted with a primer before winter hit. I am not really sure of the color for the door. I was originally thinking bright blue, but now I am leaning towards something softer. Ugh the decisions!!
